Redirect checker: trace every hop

A redirect checker follows a URL from the address you enter to the page that finally loads and lists every hop with its HTTP status code. It flags long chains, temporary redirects used for permanent moves and hops through plain HTTP, the three redirect problems that most often cost rankings after a migration.

What this tool checks

Why it matters

Each extra hop slows the page and risks losing signals. Temporary redirects tell search engines the old URL may come back, so ranking signals may not move to the new one. Chains usually build up quietly after migrations and redesigns.

How to fix what it finds

  1. Redirect old URLs straight to the final page in one hop.
  2. Use 301 or 308 for permanent moves.
  3. Update internal links and your sitemap to the final URLs.

Redirect checker: common questions

Is a 308 redirect the same as a 301?

Both are permanent. A 308 also keeps the request method, which matters for forms and APIs. Google treats both as permanent for ranking.

How many redirects are too many?

Google follows up to about 10, but every hop adds delay and risk. Aim for at most one between any link and its final page.

Why does my URL redirect twice?

The usual pattern is http to https, then a www or trailing-slash rule. Combine them into one rule that sends every variant straight to the final address.

Fix it once. Keep it fixed.
